I have designed this evaluation to cover all the key language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) in a balanced and fair manner. By assigning specific percentages to each category and subcategory, I aim to give students opportunities to demonstrate their skills in various areas. The largest portion of the continuous assessment (60% of the final grade) focuses on reading, as I believe it is one of the most important skills in language learning. However, I have also given significant weight to the other skills so that students are assessed across all areas.
I find it positive that the evaluation does not rely on a single exam, but rather spreads the opportunities throughout the course, reducing pressure on the students and giving them space to improve continuously. This proportional distribution of percentages ensures that students have multiple chances to demonstrate their ability in each area. Additionally, the final exam (40% of the total grade) covers all the skills, allowing students to consolidate what they have learned throughout the course. However, I believe the evaluation could be improved by adding more personalized feedback so that students can work specifically on their areas for improvement. Some students may excel in certain skills, like reading, but struggle with speaking, so individualized feedback would be very helpful.
From a pedagogical perspective, this approach promotes continuous and balanced learning, which I believe is essential for students to develop a comprehensive understanding of the language. By assessing different skills continuously, students have the opportunity to reflect on their progress and improve over time. Furthermore, the continuous assessment allows students to receive feedback throughout the course, helping them adjust their efforts along the way.
However, it is also important to recognize the individual differences among students. Some may excel in one skill, like reading, but find speaking more challenging. As a teacher, I can use the results of the evaluation to identify areas that need more attention and adapt my teaching accordingly. Additionally, I think including activities like self-assessment and peer evaluation would be beneficial. These practices encourage reflection and help students become more aware of their strengths and weaknesses, while also fostering a more collaborative and inclusive learning environment.
Regarding the use of Excel to manage and analyze the evaluation results, I find it to be a very useful tool. Excel has allowed me to efficiently organize and calculate all the grades, apply the different weights to each evaluation, and automatically calculate the final grades, saving me time and effort. Moreover, the ability to create graphs and tables has made it easier to visualize the students' results, allowing me to quickly identify patterns, areas where students need improvement, and how they compare to one another.
I also value how Excel has allowed me to keep a clear and organized record of the results over time. This not only helps me track students' progress but also enables me to provide more accurate and targeted feedback. However, I recognize that while Excel is a powerful tool for managing data, it can be overwhelming if the spreadsheets are not well organized. It’s important to take the time to properly structure the file to avoid confusion or errors in the calculations.
In summary, the designed evaluation structure, combined with the use of Excel to manage the data, has allowed me to keep a detailed record of students' progress, make more effective assessments, and offer more precise and personalized feedback. As I continue to use this tool, I will keep learning to optimize it to better meet the needs of my students and the teaching-learning process.
